News Releases THE DIRECTORS COLLEGE RECEIVES HARVARD ENDORESMENT The Directors College, a joint venture of The Conference Board of Canada and the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, has received an endorsement from the Harvard School of Business for its director education program. A comprehensive professional development and certification program for corporate directors, The Directors College is the only program of its kind in Canada that leads to formal university accreditation - the "Chartered Director*" designation (C.Dir.*). Renowned corporate governance expert and professor of Human Relations at the Harvard Business School, Jay Lorsch has added his name to a growing list of endorsers of the innovative professional development program. When asked about The Directors College, Lorsch, who is the author of more than a dozen business books, including the most recently published Back to the Drawing Board: Designing Corporate Boards for a Complex World, has this to say: “Where once directors could be called mere ornaments, today they need to take their responsibilities very seriously. Director education, therefore, has become more important than ever. The Chartered Director program offered by The Directors College is a great example of the kind of director training that should be offered around the world.” Born out of a growing recognition of the importance of good governance, The Directors College provides meaningful professional development. In addition to technical knowledge, the program focuses on critical boardroom behaviours necessary for effective governance, such as balancing competing stakeholder interests and dealing with non-performing board members. “We’re focused on providing a practical and effective curriculum designed to address both the structural and behavioural skills required to be a competent board member,” says Dr. Chris Bart, founder and lead professor of The Directors College. Canadian businesses are taking notice, enrolling current and prospective board members in the program in growing numbers. Lorsch agrees that it’s a wise move. “I strongly encourage those interested in becoming truly ‘professional’
directors to sign-up for this unique and engaging initiative. In my view,
it offers the training tools and skills needed to be the kind of 21st
century director that every country needs.” * The Directors College, Chartered Director and C.Dir are Official Marks of McMaster University. All rights reserved.
