New program targets corporate directors By Ottawa Business Journal Staff The first of its kind program is a joint effort between the Conference Board of Canada and the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University. The Directors College, as it will be called, will target both experienced corporate directors as well as neophytes. "Our program will not only cover the 'mechanics' of being a competent director, but will also focus on the principles of being a director who is constructively involved in defining the role of his or her company in Canadian society," Vishwanath Baba, dean of the DeGroote School, said in a statement. The curriculum will be tailored to the culture of Canadian business and promote professional standards. The integrity and value of corporate directors has become a burning issue over the past couple of years with the host of accounting scandals that have come to light south of the border. "Our conversations with corporate executives and our members make it clear that the need for this program is urgent," Mark Schacter, director of governance and corporate social responsibility for the Conference Board, said in a statement. Faculty will include specialists from the corporate, legal, and academic sectors. Subjects to be covered in the curriculum include compliance, liability, ethics, auditing and internal control, and compensation. Participants who successfully complete the course will obtain an accredited Chartered Director certification.
